Remembering Bob Aplin

As our Regatta Programme went to press in June it was with great
sadness that we learned that Bob Aplin, one of our Life Presidents, had died.
Bob, as well as being a huge supporter and stalwart of Beer Regatta, was a great character and will be sadly missed by everyone in the village

Bob ‘The Pebble’ Hodson

One of Beer Regatta’s most colourful stalwarts Bob ‘the pebble’ Hodson sadly died in the early spring this year.
Together with his wife Dot, he visited Beer every summer for over 35 years and was
a familiar sight either playing his ukele, painting pebbles for his legion of young fans or raising funds for Beer Regatta on Sea Hill – always in a different (and
innovative!) costume.
Beer, and especially Regatta, was very close to Bob’s heart and he is sadly
missed by all his friends in the village

Darts Competition

There’s a shining trophy and cash prize for the winners of our Regatta Doubles Darts Competition to be held at Beer Club, Berry Hill on Monday 8 August. The competition starts at 8pm sharp and entrants must be 14 or over.

Another year, another Regatta!!! I hope you are all ready for another fun filled week?
I am pleased to report that Beer Regatta 2010 was a success and feedback was positive at the debrief meeting way back last August. Our much-debated changes to the sailing programme paid off. The move to Saturday racing for the dinghy sailing saw increased entries and we welcomed crews from Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. Therefore 2011 will follow the same format; Thursday for cruisers, luggers and working boats and Saturday for the dinghy racing. Please note that all are welcome to the prize giving and barbecue that will be held at the Sailing Club afterwards (see Sat 13th for details).
The Funday Sunday was once more extremely well supported. It’s great to have such a wonderful venue as Beer Albion Football Club where we can hold a truly family fun filled day!
So Regatta 2011!!! What news to report??? Well after much deliberation I am sad to say that we have decided that the Regatta Dance should be put on hold this year. Unfortunately low attendance last year made it financially unviable. Sad but true, it will be missed by some but not forgotten and I never say never, so maybe a revival in the future?? Instead get ready for a hoe-down and swing your partner as we’re holding a Barn Dance with supper instead on the first Saturday night!!!!
We also have a new darts competition which will be held at Beer Social Club on Monday evening to add to the programme and the Axminster Majorettes, ‘Karizma’ will be leading the procession on Thursday.
Our biggest change is to the Princess Competition; it was felt it was high time to let the boys have a go! Thinking caps on… well who better to ask than the children themselves! So Anna Vine visited Beer Primary School and came back with a proposal for a competition that could be entered in pairs, open to all and along the lines of a mascot. So on Saturday afternoon we will be presenting not one, but four Regatta Mascots. But what does a mascot wear??? Well you’ll have to wait and see?! And no it isn’t a dragon or bear suit!!!
So I hope you’ve read through your programme and found something you’ll enjoy, with over 20 events we hope there’s something for everyone!
Please send us your photos and comments for this or any previous year. I know I’m not alone when I think about what a wonderful place Beer is. Our community always pulls together for village events and that’s why it’s such a special place. I had the good fortune to be able to travel earlier in the year, which took me to some amazing and beautiful places, but nothing quite beats home… BEER! As the song goes …’it’s a little peace of heaven and the angels call it Beer’
Thank you to EVERYONE, whatever part you play in the Regatta, we couldn’t do it without you. Please attend the events and most importantly HAVE FUN!

Regatta Barn Dance

Get ready for a Ho Down! This year we are holding a Regatta Barn Dance at The Mariners’ Hall on Saturday 6 August. The Barnstormers will be providing the music and the event runs from 7.30 for 8pm till Midnight. Included in your £10 ticket price is a ploughman’s supper and there is a licensed bar in the hall. 2011 Regatta Raffle

Tickets for the 2011 Beer Regatta Raffle are now on sale. The top prize is a One Week Holiday courtesy of Beet Head Caravan Park. The second prize is £150 cash donated by The Dolphin Hotel and third prize is a £40 meal voucher by The Anchor Inn with a £25 meal voucher from Steamers Restaurant as fourth prize. There are many, many more prizes so get your tickets early! Local shops are selling them and they will also be available at Regatta Events.

Beer Regatta Centenary

Beer Regatta is 97 years old and we are getting very excited about our impending centenary. Sadly we won’t be getting a birthday card from the Queen but we are planning a party and you are invited! We are also going to produce a special souvenir programme and we would like your Regatta photos and memories to go in it. Millennium Cup for Services to the Village
